PayleanTM Introduction to the Pork Industry

Introduction:
Paylean
TM (ractopamine hydrochloride) is a feed additive that repartitions nutrients to increase the quantity of lean tissue in hog carcasses. It is not a hormone or an antibiotic. This compound enhances average daily lean growth, efficiency of growth, total average daily gain, loin eye area, and total percent lean. PayleanTM can be applied at concentrations of 4.5 to 18 g/ton of complete feed.

Discussion:
Paylean
TM has been studied for nearly two decades between 1985 and 1992. The table below represents research data from that time frame. However, new trials have been done in 2000 and 2001 on the leaner genetics in use commercially today that confirms these numbers.

Effect of PayleanTM Dosage on Pig Performance

PayleanTM  g/ton 0 4.5 9 18
A.D.G. lbs. 1.84 1.97 (72%) 1.99 (83%) 2.02
F/G Ratio* 3.62 3.33 (63%) 3.25 (80%) 3.16
Dressing Percent** 73.3 73.7 (36%) 74.1 (73%) 74.4
10th Rib Backfat** 1.08 1.06 (15%) 0.99 (70%) 0.95
LEA. Sq. In.** 5.08 5.51 (60%) 5.68 (83%) 5.80
% Lean** 51.8 53.9 (37%) 55.6 (67%) 57.5

** Thirteen trial summary
(  ) Percent of maximum Paylean level (18 g/ton) response

From these studies, it is readily apparent that PayleanTM redirects nutrients from fat deposition to increasing muscle cell growth. All carcass parameters, except 10th rib backfat at 4.5 g/ton were significantly improved when PayleanTM was used. Growth and feed efficiency were significantly improved with every PayleanTM dosage (4.5-18 g/ton).

Application:
Currently the Paylean
TM label provides most of the guidance for the application of this feed additive. The critical points are as follows:

  • Feed in complete swine rations containing a minimum of 16% crude protein.
  • Rations containing PayleanTM must be fed continuously. Tylan is the only feed additive cleared for use with PayleanTM.
  • Use levels of PayleanTM range from 4.5 to 18 g/ton.
  • Feed to growing/finishing swine from 150 to 240 lbs. body weight.
  • PayleanTM has no withdrawal prior to slaughter.
  • PayleanTM is not cleared for usage in breeding animals.

Suther Products:

  • PayleanTM Pak - Allows the producer to mix complete feeds utilizing PayleanTM for usage rates from 4.5 to 18 g/ton.
  • Showtime PL 9 - Complete feed specially formulated for show pig producers wanting to utilize PayleanTM at 9 g/ton.
  • Muscle Max - A nutrient dense protein supplement with PayleanTM designed to allow for accurate mixing of PayleanTM in show pig diets at usage rates from 4.5 to 18 g/ton.

Recent trials submitted to the FDA in 2000 and 2001 show that PayleanTM is very effective as a feed additive as shown above. PayleanTM has no negative effects on meat color, firmness scores, or marbling.

PayleanTM should be utilized no more than 4 weeks prior to slaughter. The animal responds to PayleanTM very quickly and dramatically in terms of growth rate and muscle deposition. However, this response begins to slow after about two weeks of use. For this reason, begin feeding at the low rate of 4.5 or 9 g/ton and utilize a step-up program to maintain the desired response.

PayleanTM is not a substitute for good genetic selection. It does allow the animal further expression of lean muscle tissue. There is no substitute for quality management, nutrition and environment.
