Paylean^TM Introduction to the Pork Industry

Introduction:
Paylean^TM (ractopamine hydrochloride) is a feed additive that repartitions nutrients to increase the quantity of lean tissue in hog carcasses. It is not a hormone or an antibiotic. This compound enhances average daily lean growth, efficiency of growth, total average daily gain, loin eye area, and total percent lean. Paylean^TM can be applied at concentrations of 4.5 to 18 g/ton of complete feed.

Discussion:
Paylean^TM has been studied for nearly two decades between 1985 and 1992. The table below represents research data from that time frame. However, new trials have been done in 2000 and 2001 on the leaner genetics in use commercially today that confirms these numbers.

From these studies, it is readily apparent that Paylean^TM redirects nutrients from fat deposition to increasing muscle cell growth. All carcass parameters, except 10th rib backfat at 4.5 g/ton were significantly improved when Paylean^TM was used. Growth and feed efficiency were significantly improved with every Paylean^TM dosage (4.5-18 g/ton).

Application:
Currently the Paylean^TM label provides most of the guidance for the application of this feed additive. The critical points are as follows:

• Feed in complete swine rations containing a minimum of 16% crude protein.
• Rations containing Paylean^TM must be fed continuously. Tylan is the only feed additive cleared for use with Paylean^TM.
• Use levels of Paylean^TM range from 4.5 to 18 g/ton.
• Feed to growing/finishing swine from 150 to 240 lbs. body weight.
• Paylean^TM has no withdrawal prior to slaughter.
• Paylean^TM is not cleared for usage in breeding animals.

Suther Products:

• Paylean^TM Pak - Allows the producer to mix complete feeds utilizing Paylean^TM for usage rates from 4.5 to 18 g/ton.
• Showtime PL 9 - Complete feed specially formulated for show pig producers wanting to utilize Paylean^TM at 9 g/ton.
• Muscle Max - A nutrient dense protein supplement with Paylean^TM designed to allow for accurate mixing of Paylean^TM in show pig diets at usage rates from 4.5 to 18 g/ton.

Recent trials submitted to the FDA in 2000 and 2001 show that Paylean^TM is very effective as a feed additive as shown above. Paylean^TM has no negative effects on meat color, firmness scores, or marbling.

Paylean^TM should be utilized no more than 4 weeks prior to slaughter. The animal responds to Paylean^TM very quickly and dramatically in terms of growth rate and muscle deposition. However, this response begins to slow after about two weeks of use. For this reason, begin feeding at the low rate of 4.5 or 9 g/ton and utilize a step-up program to maintain the desired response.

Paylean^TM is not a substitute for good genetic selection. It does allow the animal further expression of lean muscle tissue. There is no substitute for quality management, nutrition and environment.
